Second Mountain Day to be held at UNFCCC meet in Doha

Doha, Qatar
From: 03.12.2012 to: 03.12.2012

The second annual Mountain Day will take place during this year’s Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Doha in December. The event is organized each year to bring attention to the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems and mountain people to the impacts of climate change and to offer solutions to UNFCCC negotiators on adaptation and mitigation actions.

“This year, participants at the event will be presenting and sharing real-life stories and examples of trends in climate change impacts and how they affect the livelihoods of mountain people,” said Thomas Hofer, interim coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, which is a joint organizer of the day.

“It’s also a chance to underline the increasing economic and environmental roles mountain people and ecosystems play in enhancing food, water, energy and ecological security in and beyond mountain regions.”

“We hope that the event will send out a strong message to UNFCCC negotiators and policy makers, and ensure that mountains become a priority in the global climate agenda.”

Following a morning session on climate change stories from the mountains, the day will include sessions on the integrated management of mountain water resources, the role of mountains in food security and livelihoods, and a high-level round table to conclude the event.

A parallel knowledge café on climate change and mountains will take place throughout the day.

Mountain Day 2 is being organized jointly by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the context of the Strategic Initiative for Mountains and Climate Change funded by the Development Grant Facility of the World Bank.

Other sponsors and partners include the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), Water and Climate Coalition (WCC), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and the Government of Nepal.

Mountain Day 2 will take place at the Intercontinental Hotel, Doha on Monday 3 December from 10.00 to 19.30.
