8th International Meeting of Rural Andean Peoples

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
From: 12.10.2017 to: 15.10.2017

The eighth International Meeting of Rural Andean Peoples will be held in San Pedro De Atacama, Chile on 12-15 October 2017. Organized by the village of Lickanantay, Red de Agroindustria Rural del Perú (REDAR Perú), the Programme for the Development of Rural Agricultural Production of the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI-AGRORURAL PERU), the Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDESAN) and Red Andina de Saberes Haceres in the framework of the Mountain Partnership, the theme of the conference will be "Ancestral Andean-Amazonian knowledge and practices of sowing and water harvesting".

Andean peoples possess traditional knowledge about soil management, water, productive systems and natural and cultural diversity that has been developed over centuries. There is a need to revitalize, reinforce and share this traditional knowledge with others, for the benefit of the environment and of humanity. The purpose of this meeting is to deepen the comparative analysis between “Sumaq Kawsay” (ancient teachings of indigenous peoples about “good living”, in harmony with the communities and environment we live in) and current development strategies, focusing on water issues and their various implications. The objective of the meeting is to generate visibility for Sumaq Kawsay, with an emphasis on the conservation and sustainable management and use of water and watersheds.

Conference participants will include representatives from rural communities, small agro-industrial producers, local authorities, and institutions working on Andean issues in the countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Representatives from communities in other mountainous countries, such as Bhutan and India, will also participate.
