International Congress of Highlands and Mountain Ecosystems

On 12-14 July 2017, the International Congress of Highlands and Mountain Ecosystems, "Towards a regional vision of the Andes mountains", will be held in Bogotá, Colombia. The Congress will be conducted within the framework of Mountains' Week, which will consist of six days of events related to the technical, scientific and political aspects of mountain regions in the Andes.

The goal of the International Congress of Highlands and Mountain Ecosystems is to contribute to the dialogue and analysis on the strategic importance of the highlands and mountain ecosystems in the Andean region. The Congress will raise awareness about the priority problems these ecosystems face, in order to build the bases for the formalization of strategic, oriented alliances for the integral management of mountain territories in a context of climate change.

This Congress is jointly organized by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia, the Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDESAN), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the National Federation of Departments, the Governing Authority of Cundinamarca, the Regional Administration and Special Planning of Colombia and the Autonomous Regional Corporation of Cundinamarca, within the framework of the Mountain Partnership.

The event will be focused on four themes:
• Biodiversity and ecosystem services;
• Climate change;
• Communities and livelihoods; and
• Tools, instruments and management alternatives.

This Congress will bring together actors from the Andean countries, representatives of governments, academia, civil society and communities. It will have a high-level session with the participation by the various Ministers of Environment of the Andes.

Among other important activities taking place during Mountains’ Week are the regional stakeholders meeting "Strategic Agenda for Climate Change Adaptation in the Andes" being conducted by UNEP, the "Meeting of the Andean Mountain Initiative of the Mountain Partnership" and the "Meeting of Strategic National Actors".
