Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation (SLCF) NGO has been working for conducting research and conservation programmes of endangered snow leopards in Mongolia since 2007. The organization operates in western and southern Mongolia, involving more than 400 rural households who share the mountains with snow leopards. Their mission is to save snow leopards with the participation of local communities by using sound science to determine priorities for protecting the elusive cats. In 2008 they launched a long-term ecological study of snow leopards in South Gobi Mongolia, where national and international researchers collaborate with the support of the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Green Development and the National University of Mongolia. This research has yielded more information that was not known previously, which helps with the conservation of mountain ecosystems. Their community-based conservation programmes, such as Snow Leopard Enterprises, Livestock Insurance and Predator Proof Corrals, support communites’ participation while improving their livelihoods. |
