Mountain Environment Protection Society (MEPS)

The Mountain Environment Protection Society (MEPS) was established as a non-governmental organization (NGO) by a group of mountaineers and nature lovers in Tehran in 1993. Committed to conservation and sustainable mountain development, MEPS has been striving to highlight the vital importance of mountain ecosystems in Iran. It is known as the leader of mountain-related activities throughout Iran while focusing on awareness raising and capacity building among the general public and the governmental organizations. MEPS was the lead organization handling activities related to the International Year of Mountains in 2002 and has been a member of the Mountain Partnership (MP) since its inception in 2002. Following the United Nations General Assembly’s designation of 11 December as International Mountain Day (IMD), MEPS has served as the focal point for the observation and annual celebration of IMD in Iran.

In 2013, the Mountain Partnership elected MEPS to the Steering Committee to represent the civil society electoral group in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region for the four-year period, 2014-2017.
