Family forest farmers lack tree tenure rights in Nepal. However, forest farmers were unknown to these legal provisions and were caught up for either trading or transport of timbers/forest based products. Likeminded farmers during the National Conference of Family Forest Owners legally formalized the Association of Family Forest Owners Nepal (AFFON) as an umbrella organization of family forest farmers in March 2015. AFFON is organized in village chapters and district chapters and at central level. AFFON currently has 36 district working committees with 5 000 associated members. Since its inception, AFFON has been working to secure the rights of the family forest owners as well as their economic transformation through the sustainable forest management. |
