During the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, to be held in Rio de Janeiro in June this year, Peru will lead an important initiative for all mountain countries and those that depend on mountain areas.

The Mountain Pavilion has been conceived as part of a long-term commitment on the part of the Peruvian Government to work towards sustainable development in mountain regions. The Pavilion has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of strategic allies among international cooperation, as well as diverse organisations around the world. All partners and other interested groups, including the private sector, will be able to showcase achievements and progress in sustainable development in mountain regions as part of a multipurpose platform.

More than 2000 people per day are expected to visit the Pavilion, led by Peru, as a major contribution to the Rio+20 Conference. The Pavilion will offer the 191 countries participating in the Conference on Sustainable Development, different events to be held at the Pavilion’s auditorium, meeting rooms and multimedia installations, as well as the Peruvian Corner, a permanent stand for the Pavilion’s host country to promote the initiative.

The Minister of the Environment, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, invited all countries to join the initiative, following the call from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, among other actors. Gabriel Quijandría, the Vice-minister for Strategic Development of Natural Resources at the Ministry of the Environment, added, “we firmly believe that this Pavilion and the associated activities will contribute to channelling efforts and achievements of different countries for the inclusive and sustainable development of mountain ecosystems, especially for the poor and vulnerable populations of our countries”.

The Mountain Pavilion will be located in the Athlete’s Park, and will be open from 13 to 24 June 2012 between 11.00 am and 7.00 pm. Specifically, the Pavilion will hold events, such as a ministerial meeting for mountain countries, the Third General Meeting of the Mountain Partnership, conferences, round-table discussions, multimedia exhibitions, artistic events, among others, which will present information and experiences related to mountain programmes and projects around the world. Thus, the Mountain Pavilion will represent a dynamic opportunity for political dialogue on mountain ecosystems and a chance to share knowledge and knowhow on the issues affecting their development.

If your institution is interested in participating in the Mountain Pavilion and has definite proposals which could be included within this initiative, or can provide financial or other kinds of support, please write to [email protected] before the 16 May 2012.
