MP Steering Committee meets virtually

04.06.2021

The Mountain Partnership Steering Committee met virtually on 29 April 2021 to provide strategic guidance to the Partnership. This was the sixth meeting of the Steering Committee since its election at the Fifth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership in December 2017.

Andrea Macchioni of the Government of Italy chaired the meeting, which opened with an overview of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat’s accomplishments since the last meeting in November 2020. The Secretariat then presented its 2021 work plan, which was approved by the Steering Committee. Brief updates were furthermore given by the three Steering Committee working groups on Advocacy and Communications, Local Governance and Resource Mobilization.

Two key agenda items included reviewing members’ proposals for hosting the Sixth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership in 2022 as well as defining the process for the revision of the Mountain Partnership’s key strategy documents in view of the upcoming Global Meeting. Proposals were given by the Aspen International Mountain Foundation, Canadian Mountain Network, Eurac Research, and the National Agency for Mountain Areas of Romania. The Steering Committee has until Monday, 7 June 2021 to decide where the next Global Meeting will be hosted, and their decision will then be communicated to the membership.

Regarding the revision of the Mountain Partnership’s four strategy documents on Advocacy, Communication and Governance, it was decided that the Secretariat would prepare the first drafts of revisions. The Steering Committee will then review and share with the membership for comments. The final revised strategies will be shared with the membership at least six weeks prior to the next Global Meeting and then adopted at the Global Meeting.

The Steering Committee meeting closed with Mountain Partnership Secretariat Coordinator Yuka Makino officially announcing her stepping down. The Steering Committee members expressed their heartfelt thanks to Yuka for her service to the Partnership.
