Colorado, first US state to join MP

10.01.2022

On 16 December 2021, the State of Colorado became the first state of the United States of America to join the Mountain Partnership through its Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office (OREC), a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

“Colorado continues to be a leader in not only the economic development of our mountain communities but also the care and stewardship of the finite resources that our mountain communities rely on for their future prosperity,” said Nathan Fey, OREC Director. “From the Confluence of States to the Mountain Partnership, we are joining with other industry leaders to ensure best practices in the management and use of our natural areas.”

The Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office’s four core pillars – economic development, conservation and stewardship, education and workforce training, and public health and wellness – will complement the areas of work of the Mountain Partnership, which include advocacy, communication and knowledge management, capacity development, and joint action.

The move to join the Mountain Partnership comes as Colorado prepares to be the location of the sixth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership, to be hosted by the Aspen International Mountain Foundation in September 2022 in Aspen. By becoming a member, Colorado aims to lead the United States in supporting climate action and sustainable mountain development.
