Experts call for dedicated funds to support mountain conservation

05.11.2024

Leading experts, policymakers, environmental activists and community leaders from around the world highlighted the unique vulnerabilities faced by mountain regions in the wake of climate change. They called for immediate action and climate finance strategies that prioritize these vital ecosystems, which are crucial for global sustainability.

The event, titled "Mountains and Climate Finance", was organized by Mountain Partnership member Devcom-Pakistan, in collaboration with the Institute of Regional Studies in Islamabad, Pakistan, on 30 October.

Discussions emphasized the urgent need for increased financial support to protect mountain ecosystems, which sustain millions of people both upstream and downstream. Concern was raised about the limited attention mountain regions receive in global climate finance frameworks, with speakers urging international communities to advocate for dedicated resources to address the specific climate impacts on these areas.

A key recommendation from the event was the establishment of a dedicated mountain fund within existing climate finance mechanisms, such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), to ensure targeted investment in sustainable mountain initiatives.

Munir Ahmed, Director of Devcom-Pakistan, highlighted the importance of mountains as sources of essential resources like water and biodiversity. He called for climate policies that specifically address the needs of mountain ecosystems and the communities that rely on them.

Sara Manuelli, Advocacy and Communication Officer at the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, highlighted the significance of COP28, where mountains were mentioned in the global stocktake document for the first time. She stressed the need to address vulnerabilities like food security and isolation through adequate financing. Long-term funding, innovative mechanisms and improved market access can promote sustainability and economic growth.

Speakers also underscored the need for greater regional cooperation to amplify the voices of mountain communities on the global stage, prioritizing community representation in all stages of climate policy development to incorporate local needs and knowledge into conservation efforts.

The webinar served as a preparatory session for UNFCCC COP29, scheduled for November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. It aimed to advocate for increased climate finance for mountain regions and build momentum for COP29, ensuring that mountain conservation remains prominent on the global climate agenda.
