Climate Summit for a Living Himalaya22.11.2011Climate change poses severe threats to Himalayan nations. With 24 of its 2674 glacial lakes considered unstable, the Kingdom of Bhutan alone is preparing for an increase in "mountain tsunamis", as the phenomenon is often referred to. The one occurred in 1994 caused dozens of people dead. Further to the Climate Summit for a Living Himalaya held in Bhutan’s capital Thimpu on 19 November, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan agreed to cooperate on energy, water, food and ecosystem and disaster management. Members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calculate that the melting of the Himalayan glaciers will cause water supply problems for some 750 million people. |
