He noted that mountain regions are composed by unique ecosystems. The problems they face due to climate change are mountain-specific; therefore, climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as the sustainable development of mountain areas requires implementing a specific measures focusing on mountain people and ecosystems’ needs.

During the presentation of the five-year action plan for the period 2023-2027, the Kyrgyz Republic announced a set of mountain initiatives aimed at addressing issues related to economy and trade, education and culture, environment, climate change, natural disasters and a lack of international cooperation in these fields. They advocated for the establishment of broad coalition of governments for mountains to better promote the visibility of mountain issues within various United Nations processes to bring mountains to the forefront of the discussion.

To formalize these efforts, the Kyrgyz Republic is planning to have the period 2023-2027 declared the “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions” as part of a resolution to be presented during the seventy-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly.
