Launch of the International Year of Forests – Celebrating Forests for People 2011


The International Year of Forests was officially launched on 2 February 2011, at the General Assembly Hall in New York City during UNFF9 (24 January – 4 February 2011). Forests cover 31% of total land area and they are home to 300 million people around the world. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. Information regarding scheduled events and initiatives as well as interactive web tools and resources to promote dialogue on forests will be available on the newly launched website.
