Bhutan+10: Gender and Sustainable Mountain Development in a Changing World

23.10.2012

Some 170 policy makers, researchers and development practitioners from 27 countries came together for the government of Bhutan’s international conference on gender and sustainable mountain development in October. The conference, Bhutan+10: Gender and Sustainable Mountain Development in a Changing World, came a decade after Bhutan organized a global event entitled Celebrating Mountain Women to focus attention on women in the context of sustainable mountain development during the 2002 International Year of Mountains.

During the five-day meeting, the creation of a new global network on Women, Gender, Environment and Mountains (WGEM) was announced, and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) launched its Study on Gender and Biodiversity Management in the Greater Himalayas.

The conference comprised six plenaries and 18 parallel sessions, with events including panels on the differential impact of disaster on women and men, the role of gender and women in rangeland management, and gender, land tenure and grabs.

Elbegzaya Batjargal from the Mountain Partnership Secretariat was among guests discussing the gender aspects of climate change impacts in a mountain context with reference to Central Asia.

The final Bhutan+10 conference declaration calls for “better integration of mountain perspectives in all sectors and scales of international development, sufficient human and financial resources for gender analysis and transformative change, affirmative action, recognition of women and men as active players on a level playing field, and the promotion of wellbeing and happiness in mountain countries”.

The conference was organized in the context of the Mountain Partnership with key support from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and was supported by the German Agency for International Cooperation, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the International Fund for Economic Development, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the Canadian International Development Research Centre and the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation.
