2022 UN report on mountains now available

09.09.2022

The 2022 United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) report on sustainable mountain development is now available online in the six UN languages.

Every three years, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as the mandated lead UN agency on mountains, together with the Mountain Partnership Secretariat is tasked to prepare the UNSG report on sustainable mountain development, in collaboration with governments, relevant agencies of the UN system and NGOs.

The 2022 report highlights the status and progress made in promoting sustainable mountain development at the national and international levels, since the previous UNSG report in 2019 (A/74/209). It highlights specific thematic areas of focus – including climate change, ecosystem restoration and protection, economies and livelihoods, and governance – and provides an overview of the results, impacts and changes achieved through action at national, regional and global level. It concludes with a series of recommendations for sustainable mountain development.

The UNSG report will be presented at the seventy-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly as requested by the latest UNGA resolution (A/RES/74/227).
