The Conference for Young Botanists (CYBO) took place from 5 to 7 February 2025 in Genoa, Italy. Dr. Alex Alberto, UNIMONT, presented the case study of the “Articiok di Malegno”, a rare alpine artichoke found in the Camonica Valley of northern Italy.

At the Conference for Young Botanists in Genoa, an event aimed primarily at PhD students and post-doctoral fellows with the aim of promoting dialogue and networking among young researchers, Dr. Alex Alberto, research fellow at the UNIMONT hub of the University of Milan, gave a presentation entitled “Landraces for valorizing mountain areas: the case study of ‘Articiok di Malegno’ (Cynara cardunculus subsp. scolymus L. Hayek)”, which explored the potential impact of work on landraces in valorizing mountain areas.

The presentation explored the potential impact of work on landraces in the enhancement of mountain areas, highlighting how these local varieties can represent a resource for the sustainable development of Alpine territories. This approach is part of the research activities of the Ge.S.Di.Mont. Research Centre, active since 2006 at the UNIMONT hub to promote scientific studies applied to mountain areas.

The Ge.S.Di.Mont. Research Centre is researching local landraces not only with the aim of characterizing them, but also in order to study how biodiversity in the mountains can represent a strong catalyst for territorial development.
