The International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas (IPROMO) is organized annually by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with the University of Turin and the University of Tuscia.

IPROMO offers training to practitioners, technicians and officers from governmental, public, private and non-governmental organizations on the sustainable management of mountain areas. Its aim is to strengthen the capacity of countries and institutions that are part of the Mountain Partnership, a United Nations alliance dedicated to improving mountain livelihoods and protecting mountain environments around the world.

IPROMO is financially supported by the MPS of FAO, the University of Turin and the University of Tuscia, the town of Ormea and a number of local authorities and private sector partners. In addition, international organizations such as the World Bank, GIZ and CONDESAN have also provided fellowships for some editions.

Structure, venue and participation

The two-week, full-immersion course is held annually in the summer and focuses on a different subject related to sustainable mountain development every year, such as mountain livelihoods, forests and biodiversity. Emphasis is placed on involving local communities in mountain ecosystem and economic management, learning from experiences, and accessing innovations and traditional knowledge.

Conducted in the Italian alpine venues of Ormea and Pieve Tesino, IPROMO is open to both graduate and post-graduate applicants with participants being selected carefully to ensure a balanced representation of gender, region and scientific background. Instructors are both from the academic and the United Nations world, offering a good mix of theoretical and practical experiences and perspectives.

Since the beginning of the programme in 2008, IPROMO has trained more than 500 professionals from 93 different countries. The Alumni network allows participants and instructors to maintain the connection and continue sharing information.
