REDD+ and National Forest Monitoring at COP26 Glasgow

Kicking off on 2 November, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, United Kingdom, is an annual event that bolsters international cooperation on climate action. At COP, national emissions and climate commitments are reviewed and renewed, knowledge on climate mitigation strategies is shared and there is open dialogue among governments, the private sector, community changemakers, environmental experts and more. The FAO REDD+/National Forest Monitoring initiatives and projects will be prominently featured at following COP26 events: 

  • Forests and People: How can REDD+ support Indigenous and Local Communities, and what have we learned so far?  

Date/time: 1 November, 10:00-11:00 (GMT)  

Format: In-person at the UK Pavilion 

This event, designed as an open panel discussion, will explore various themes surrounding the importance of social inclusion in forest protection and land management through REDD+. It will draw on experiences from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC), as well as from representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSO). Also, the event will highlight REDD+ actions that have and can continue to support these communities.   

  • Peatlands in NDCs and LTSs — exchange of experiences

This panel discussion will explore good practices of peatland monitoring and management, highlighting the use of peatland data to refine enhanced nationally determined contributions (NDCs). It will draw on the experiences of the Global Peatlands Initiative and aspects of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.  

  • Central Africa: has deforestation peaked? Early Insights

This event will discuss challenges and opportunities to turn the tide on deforestation in Central Africa and present the results of the CAFI/FAO assessment of the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in the region between 2015 and 2020. 

  • Financing forest action: investing in forests to address the climate crisis

This side event will explore opportunities to scale up finance for forest actions that will help keep global warming below 1.5 C. Drawing from the knowledge and experiences of high-level decision makers, this event aims to promote dialogue and consensus building that would in turn mobilize funding for forest-related climate solutions.  

  • Curtail deforestation: how to measure progress? REDD+ tools and methodologies

The event will introduce tools and methodologies that are widely used by countries when constructing their Forest Reference Emission Levels/Forest Reference Levels (FRELs/FRLs).  

  • How can satellites help save the forests? Experiences from One Year of the NICFI Data Program 

Date/time: 7 November, 16:00-19:00 (GMT)  

Format: In-person (by-invitation only), Glasgow, UK 

The event will bring together leaders from the Government, Private, NGO, and Multilateral sectors to discuss how technology and data are helping facilitate solutions in the fight against tropical deforestation and climate change. 

  • #Data4BetterClimateAction: The value of transparency to advance national priorities while fulfilling climate reporting

The event will bring together the #Data4BetterClimateAction campaign partners and supporters, to discuss various climate initiatives and draw attention to the value of climate and forest data transparency.  

  • Technology and data collection for peatlands management
