Developed by the FAO, SEPAL - System for Earth Observation Data Access, Processing and Analysis for Land Monitoring - helps countries monitor and report on forests and land use. SEPAL offers users unparalleled access to satellite data, an easy to use interface, and powered by cloud-based super computers, paving the...
The world’s forests act as shields, keeping humans safe from zoonotic diseases, such as coronaviruses. Their destruction canhave devastating consequences not only for climate change and biodiversity loss, but also for global public health. However, REDD+ and the conservation and sustainable management of forests can provide opportunities to both recover from COVID-19 and prevent future pandemics.
This publication provides an overview of various aspects of boosting transparnecy of forest data for climate action. It was developed under the project “Building global capacity to increase transparency in the forest sector (CBIT-Forest)” aiming to strengthen capacities of developing countries to collect, analyze and disseminate forest-related data.
The aim of this paper is to inform countries about recent developments in the measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of REDD+ activities under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It provides an update on submissions on forest reference (emission) levels (FREL/FRLs) and REDD+ results reporting; a summary...
Efforts on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) have created opportunities for forest monitoring capacity development and have also aimed to inform forest management and policy-making. This paper explores how forest monitoring can inform problem-solving, especially in public policy.
