World Antimicrobials Awareness Week 2020: Face Book Live Session - AMR & ONE HEALTH approach

Date:  Thursday, 19 November 2020
Time:  11-12 am

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the most complex threat to human and animal health, potentially leading to millions of deaths a year and hundreds of billions of dollars lost in annual economic growth. The threat of AMR has risen on the global agenda with a recognition that collaboration across countries and sectors (human, animal, plant, and environmental health) is needed to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of current efforts.

The AMR action plan at global, regional and national levels supports the Global AMR Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, adopting a “One Health” approach including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and lead by the World Health Organization (WHO) (Tripartite collaboration).

To ensure that today’s cures are available for generations to come, a One Health approach is required to systematically address key challenges that include:

-          Responsible use and management, whilst ensuring access to existing and new antimicrobials.

-          Robust human and animal health systems in countries and between countries to prevent infections from spreading.

-          Universally agreed priorities and mechanisms to foster innovation towards quality and inexpensive diagnostic tests that provide care.

-          The transformation of animal husbandry (terrestrial and aquatic) to substantially reduce antimicrobial use whilst boosting agricultural productivity and ensuring food security and safety.

Objective: Raising the awareness on the AMR One Health concepts for development of an integrated response to AMR.
