Dates: 21 -24 November 2022

Venue: Cairo,  InterContinental Cairo Semiramis

The FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa is organizing the training “Towards gender-transformative interventions in the agricultural and rural sector the NENA region”, which will be held in Cairo from 21 to 23 November 2022.

The training, designed by the RNE Gender Specialists in close collaboration with expert trainers from ITC-ILO, aims to strengthen participants’ awareness and capacities to design and implement gender-responsive and gender-transformative interventions in the priority areas of work of FAO in the region.

Forty-five participants from all countries in the region have already confirmed their participation, including FAO staff acting as Gender Focal Points, project managers, and other technical officers. The training is also targeting representatives from ministries and national institutions in charge of promoting gender mainstreaming and social inclusion in agricultural and rural development interventions.

Building on their knowledge and experience, participants will have the opportunity to learn about gender-transformative approaches and methodologies and about their application in the context of agriculture-related projects and programmes in the Near East and North Africa. Through case studies and practical examples, participants will have the chance to practice how to design and formulate interventions that effectively address gender inequalities in different technical areas of work, such as agri-food value chain development, natural resource management and climate change adaptation.

After the training, on November 24, FAO Gender Focal Points will be involved in a Strategic Planning retreat with the RNE Gender Specialists and gender experts from headquarters to lay the foundation of a new Regional Gender Strategy for the RNE region.

Overall, the Regional Gender Training and Strategic Planning Meeting aims to:

-        Reinforce capacities to plan and implement gender-responsive and gender-transformative interventions

-        Strengthen vertical and horizontal collaboration and knowledge sharing on gender equality and women’s empowerment across countries in the region

-        Identify projects and initiatives to be documented, replicated and scaled-up

-        Identify the main components of the new RNE Regional Gender Strategy
