Inception Workshop of the national project "Strengthening the National Codex Committee and the Codex Contact Point in Lebanon"


Background: In recognition of the importance of complying with Codex food standards to both the Lebanese economy and to the protection of the health of consumers, the Government of Lebanon has requested the technical assistance of FAO for Strengthening the National Codex Committee and the Codex Contact Point in Lebanon and for providing the necessary knowledge concerning the application of risk analysis in the development of Codex standards.

This project aims in particular at:
  • Strengthening the work of the National Codex Committee and the National Codex Contact Point and insuring that all ministries, non-governmental organizations, consumers and industry would have ample opportunity to present their views on various Codex matters, including aspects related to food control matters.
  • Enhancing the participation of Lebanon in Codex activities and, recommending the relevant actions needed to harmonize Lebanese food standards and technical regulations with Codex Alimentarius requirements.
  • Assisting Lebanon in its duty as Coordinator of the Codex Committee for the Near East

The inception workshop will be held under the patronage of HE, The Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Hussein Hajj Hassan,, in collaboration with the Lebanese Standards Institution (Libnor) and will be attended by policy makers from the Ministries of Health, Industry, Economy and Trade, and other related Ministries in addition to representatives from the food industry, consumer protection associations and NGOs.
