Training on the use of the tools WOCAT
General objective is to train SLM specialists in the use of WOCAT-LADA tools (QT, QA and QM) that enable countries to document technologies and approaches in land and water management applied locally through indigenous as well as project introduced technologies and approaches so that best practices and knowledge is shared locally, within country, regionally and globally.

Specific objectives

The tools would allow countries to develop:
  • Land Use System (LUS) map and mapping of LD and SWC/SLM using mapping questionnaire (QM). Entering data (QT, QA, QM) in databases and quality check.
  • Create an enabling environment: institutional, policy and legal framework
  • Ensure local participation combined with regional planning
  • Build capacities / train people
  • Monitor / assess SLM practices and their impacts
  • Provide decision support at local / regional level
    – Identify, document and assess SLM practices
    – Select and adapt SLM practices
    – Select priority areas for interventions

Activities

WOCAT-LADA tools and the networks to be established in the countries are expected to offer and add value in effective systems that help in :

  • Establishing knowledge sharing platform: dissemination of information and exchange of experiences, mutual benefits, joint effort
  • Providing tools to document, evaluate, monitor, share and spread SLM good practices in land management and tenure governance
  • Having standardised format for documentation of SLM technologies and approaches
  • Producing maps of land management and tenure, land degradation and SLM
  • Establishing database to store and retrieve. Open access, option of query and data analysis (flexible, interactive)
  • Creating harmonised reporting for all involved in SLM (UNCCD and other conventions)
  • Developing monitoring and impact assessment methodologies
  • Identifying knowledge gaps for research
  • Using established data for informed decision making for up-scaling of SLM
  • Producing final products such as: guidelines, national overviews of good practices and maps
  • Developing policy briefs and recommendations
