Technical Workshop on raising awareness of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security
An awareness raising workshop on Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure (VGGT) of Land, Fisheries and Forests was conducted in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during October 6- 8, 2013.
The workshop was organized by FAO in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Water of UAE. It brought together 30 sub-regional professionals from seven countries, among whom 3 were women. The meeting participants were welcomed by Mr. Abdu Gasem Al Shareef AlAssiri, the Sub-Regional Representative and Coordinator of the Sub-regional office of FAO for the GCC and Yemen (UAE, KSA, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Yemen).
In response to growing and widespread interest among member states, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and its partners initiated the development of the VGGT and at its Thirty-sixth Session in October 2010, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) gave its support to the continuation of the inclusive process for developing these Guidelines.
In May 2012, the UN CFS endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests. The Guidelines are the first internationally adopted framework on governance of tenure, and they set out principles and standards for responsible practices.
