FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa

Workshop on Towards a regional FAO strategy for the Syria crisis

26/10/2013-27/10/2013

As the crisis in Syria deepens and initiatives to tackle it proliferate, there is need for FAO to arrive at a common approach at the regional level and set the direction for future work in the subregion.

This will entail learning from the experience gained so far, assessing the challenges we are facing in the field and better preparing our involvement in the UN common response plans. The overall objective of the meeting would be to arrive at a common approach to respond to the Syria crisis anchored in the FAO resilience framework, ahead of the UNDG and Emergency Directors' meetings early November in Amman.

Objectives:
  1. Through an analysis of technical and operational constraints and opportunities, identify the major areas of work for FAO in the sub-region for the next two years.
  2. Identify the critical entry points for FAO to position itself strategically in the various response plans
  3. Build a strong common narrative on the role of agriculture and food security to be used for FAO advocacy in various fora at national, sub-regional, regional and global levels. Success of our advocacy work will depend on our ability to demonstrate that agriculture is crucial.
  4. To reach a common understanding of the applicability of the concept of resilience and SO5 to the Syrian crisis
