27/10/2008-30/10/2008

The Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI), which is based in Cairo at the Regional Office for the Near East of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), will hold the second meeting of the Working Group on Fisheries Management from 27 to 30 October at the FAO premises in Cairo, Egypt.

The meeting will be attended by representatives of the eight RECOFI member countries (Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates), in addition to the FAO Secretariat of the Commission.

The Working Group on Fisheries Management is a mechanism to promote more effective regional fisheries cooperation among RECOFI member countries, and importantly to address and resolve fisheries problems of common concern.

The Working Group will consider fisheries management in a comprehensive framework addressing the biological, economic and social aspects of management. It has the ultimate objective of supporting scientifically reliable and responsible fisheries management in order to contribute to the sustainability of RECOFI fisheries.

The outcomes of the meeting will be forwarded to the Fifth Session of the RECOFI for consideration, review and endorsement, as appropriate. This Session will be held in the United Arab Emirates in May 2009. RECOFI is empowered to formulate and recommend the implementation and enforcement agreed measures for the conservation and management of the fisheries resources.
