Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Upper Tigris and Euphrates Basin: FAO Expert Meeting
The Tigris-Euphrates Basin is the largest and most important river system between the Nile and the Indus. The water scarcity that characterizes the Region where this river system is located adds to its geo-strategic importance: competition for water between users is increasing and this may be exacerbated by the potential impacts of climate change.
There has been little research on fishery and aquaculture activities on Tigris and Euphrates, particularly at a river basin level. These activities form a source of food security and employment for communities throughout the basin. Similarly, fishery and aquaculture activities and their linkages with land and water use have not been studied at length.
An understanding of the type of fisheries and aquaculture activities that take place within this river system, through an assessment of the challenges, opportunities, and constraints faced by the fisheries and aquaculture sector, as well as the potential for development and technical cooperation on a regional level would therefore be extremely valuable for this region and its development.
Acknowledging the strategic importance of these needs, FAO is organizing an expert meeting on aquaculture and fisheries in Tigris and Euphrates Basin which will be held on the 11th and the 12th of November 2012 in Erbil, Iraq.
The meeting will shed light on aquaculture development and fisheries management, processing, trading and marketing opportunities, will consider problems and opportunities created through interactions with other water users, and will look for possible ways to promote technical cooperation at a river basin level with regards to fisheries management and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development.
During the meeting, experts from the region will discuss ways to establish a sound knowledge base for fisheries and aquaculture management and development and identify possible ways to address common challenges at a river basin level.
The recommendations developed within the meeting will pave the way for the development of a sustainable system aiming to improve livelihoods and facilitate regional cooperation in the sector.
