Second Technical Meeting and Workshop on Drought Risk Management / Sand and Dust Storms and National Action Plan for Iraq
The Second Technical Meeting and Workshop on Drought Risk Management / Sand and Dust Storms and National Action Plan for Iraq was held on 2-5 December 2013 at the Landmark Amman Hotel & Conference Center, Amman, Jordan.

This was the second meeting for the integrated activities on Drought Risk Management (DRM), Sand and Dust Storms (SDS) and Desertification (NAP) in Iraq implemented by the Government of Iraq with technical and financial support from UNDAF Trust Fund, FAO, UNDP, UNEP, and UNSECO. The Ministry of Environment is coordinating these activities with other line ministries through a Task Force (DRM), a Team of Experts (SDS) and a Joint Working Group (NAP).

FAO and the other UN agencies provided the international technical expertise and facilitated analytical studies and stakeholders consultations. They consolidated the outputs and presented the draft national framework for DRM project, national programme to combat SDS and an aligned National Action Programme (NAP) to combat desertification.

The objective of the workshop was to collectively define priority actions needed to reduce and mitigate drought risks and to combat dust storms and desertification. The workshop also maximized integration and synergies among these actions through cross sectoral analysis and integrated intervention (mitigation) strategies, packages and projects.
