Third FAO Regional Workshop on Statistics for Greenhouse Gas Emissions

02/12/2013-03/12/2013

Third FAO Regional Workshop on Statistics for Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The project objective of the FAO Monitoring and Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mitigation Potential in Agriculture (MAGHG) is to support developing countries in assessing and reporting their GHG emissions from agriculture and to enhance global knowledge base on GHG emissions and mitigation potentials within the agriculture sectors.

A key component of the project is capacity development for Member Countries on GHG emissions and mitigation potentials. FAO has recently organized in Casablanca (Morocco), from 02 to 03 December 2013, the Third FAO Regional Workshop on Statistics for Greenhouse Gas Emissions, just prior to the 23rd Session of the African Commission on Agricultural Statistics (AFCAS). The FAO workshop brought together high-level staff of Ministries of Agriculture or National Statistical Agencies, and Bureaus responsible for national GHG reporting under international climate policy processes, to help further the conversation on how to improve statistics for GHG emissions.

The objectives of the workshop where:
  • Raise awareness on the importance of agricultural and forestry statistics for preparing national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and for planning national mitigation actions that link long term agricultural productivity, food security and sustainability;

  • Explore the need for increased capacity in view of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) preparation and new UNFCCC requirements to prepare and submit Biennial Update Reports (BUR), detailing national emissions and mitigation strategies by the end of 2014;

  • Facilitate communication and exchange of relevant knowledge, at national and regional level, identifying challenges, gaps, and opportunities for improving national data systems and analysis tools.
