05/11/2012-08/11/2012
Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) Sixth Meeting of the Working Group on Fisheries
The Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI), which is based in Cairo at the FAO Regional Office for the Near East, will hold the Sixth Meeting of the Working Group on Fisheries Management (WGFM) in Doha, Qatar, during the period from 5 to 8 November 2012.
The meeting will be attended by experts from the eight RECOFI Members (Kingdom of Bahrain, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Iraq, State of Kuwait, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates), in addition to the FAO Secretariat of the Commission. The WGFM is a mechanism to promote more effective regional fisheries cooperation among RECOFI member countries, and importantly to address and resolve fisheries problems of common concern.
The meeting is a follow-up of the Sixth Session of RECOFI that was held in Rome, Italy, in May 2011 during which the Commission, agreed, amongst other things, to adopt the FAO/RECOFI joint WGA and WGFM regional strategy on spatial planning for marine capture fisheries and aquaculture and, within available resources, to provide the necessary support for follow-up action for the strategy’s implementation
The objectives of the workshop are to: (i) Review of the status of implementation of fisheries management recommendation on minimum data reporting in recommendation RECOFI/6/2011/1 that entered into force on 1 January 2012; (ii) Report on the RECOFI Workshop on Social and Economic Aspects of Fisheries in the RECOFI Region (Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, 22-24 April 2012); (iii) development of regional fisheries management plans with agreed operational objectives for fisheries management; (iv) review of the outcomes of the Fifth session of the RECOFI Working Group on Fisheries Management; (v) review the main outcomes of the Near East and North Africa Regional Consultative Meeting on Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (Muscat, Oman, 26-28 April 2012); (vi) update of the programme of work and budget for the biennium 2013–2014 in relation to the Working Group on Fisheries Management; (vii) Report on the status of RECOFI’s financial situation and its implications for implementing the approved Working Group on Fisheries Management workplan; and (viii) review of the outcomes of the tripartite initiative on fisheries management cooperation in the Northern area of RECOFI and progress.
RECOFI was established in 1999 to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best utilization of living marine resources as well as the sustainable development of aquaculture in the region (http://www.fao.org/fishery/rfb/recofi/en). The Working Group on Fisheries Management aims to support and promote the sustainable management of the region’s fishery stocks, many of which are shared among RECOFI members. The WGFM provides a mechanism to foster greater regional fisheries cooperation and to address and resolve fisheries problems of common concern.
