Workshop on ?Modernization of Open Canal Irrigation Schemes Using the MASSCOTE Approach?
18/04/2009-28/04/2009
The Regional Office for the Near East of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Instituto Agronomico Mediterraneo of Bari, IAMB (CIHEAM) and the Syrian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, will organize a regional training workshop on “Modernization of Open Canal Irrigation Schemes Using the Mapping System and Services for Canal Operation Techniques (MASSCOTE) Approach”, in Aleppo, Syria from 18 - 28 April 2009.
The purpose of the training is to introduce in the region the latest approach developed by FAO on modernisation of irrigation management and canal operation, called MASSCOTE. This is considered particularly useful in the context of irrigation modernization in the Middle East which is a water scarce region and where improvements in the way water is managed can lead to significant water savings and better water delivery services to farmers.
The workshop will be attended by 20 participants from Egypt, Jordan and Syria that have large open canal public irrigation schemes and experience in planning and managing water distribution. The training will consist of familiarization with the MASSCOTE approach, in addition to conducting assessments and studies for rehabilitation of water distribution and irrigation networks and providing irrigation extension/advisory support services to farmers. The participating three countries will benefit from the training in view of adopting the approach for the modernization of their schemes in the near future.
