Regional Initiative to address water scarcity in the region of the Near East and North Africa
What are the water requirements and the financial costs required to sustainably increase agricultural productivity and enhance food security under water scarcity conditions? The Moroccan government, with the support of FAO, has carried out the first national assessment to answer to these questions. Results and main findings of the assessment will be presented in a national workshop that will bring together international agencies, private sector and civil society organizations. The exercise has been carried out within the framework of the FAO Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity . The Initiative is promoting cooperation among countries in the region to sustainably improve agricultural productivity, through a better use and management of scarce water resources. Morocco has been chosen as one of the six pilot countries of the Regional Initiative, due to its rich experience in the agriculture water resources sector.
