FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa

Regional training on Fisheries and Aquaculture Emergency Response

05/12/2016-07/12/2016

Venue: WorldFish Research Center, Abbassa, Arab Republic of Egypt

Background: Responding to emergencies and disasters, whether natural or human-induced, has become an increasingly important part of the mandate of international organizations over the past decades. This trend is likely to continue into the future, particularly as the impacts of climate change, and the increase in episodes of conflict, become more pronounced. In response to this, attention has been given to ensuring that the response efforts in emergencies are effective, coordinated and timely.

Acknowledging the critical role of FAO in this matter, the FAO Near East and North Africa Regional Office is organizing a 3-day Regional Training on Emergency Response in Fisheries and Aquaculture with emergency and/or fisheries and aquaculture experts from all over the region. With the objective to enhance the quality and accountability of preparedness and response to emergencies affecting the fisheries and aquaculture sector in the region.

The learning objectives of the 3 day training are to:

1- Understand the relationship between fisheries, aquaculture, emergency, food security and livelihoods.

2- Assess post-disaster needs in the fisheries and aquaculture sector using the FAO Guidelines for the Fisheries and Aquaculture sector on Damage and Needs Assessments in Emergencies.

3- Identify appropriate best practice responses and standards in emergency interventions in fisheries and aquaculture according to the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Emergency Response Guidance.
