FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa

Sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture development

The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, spanning from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf, holds a rich history of fisheries and aquaculture. With access to the Mediterranean and Red Seas, as well as parts of the Nile and Tigris-Euphrates basins, fisheries play a critical role in food security and livelihoods across the region. The sustainable management of both the fisheries and aquaculture sectors is increasingly important, as many countries in the region face challenges related to food security, water scarcity, and depletion of some resources and anticipated impacts of climate change.

Fisheries remain essential for coastal communities, providing employment and contributing to national economies through exports. Aquaculture is increasingly recognized as a sustainable alternative to supplement wild fish production, reducing pressure on natural fisheries while supporting economic diversification, particularly in rural areas. The development of both sectors is key to enhancing regional resilience, ensuring food security, and adapting to environmental changes in the NENA region.
