FAO mitigates sandstorms impact on agricultural production in Syria
Al Ghouta, a green belt area, is a significant supplier of vegetables and fruits for Damascus and rural Damascus. Thousands of farmers in this area rely on the production of fruits and vegetables to sustain their only source of livelihood in the face of pressures and challenges, especially climate change that puts the quality of vegetation and production rates at extreme risk. The topography of Al Ghouta is characterized by fertile plains surrounded by AlBadia lands, which in the past were characterized by its vegetation cover before being harmed by hot waves, lack of rain due to climate changes and sand dunes during summer seasons. Restoring the vegetation cover of selected areas will stabilize the soil, eliminate the impact of dust storms and protect neighbouring agricultural areas from these storms. FAO has conducted rehabilitation intervention to Al-Nasreyah reserve through opening lines and dug holes alongside 300 hectares of the center and, planting about 180 000 pastoral and drought-tolerant saplings to guarantee the revitalization of a green belt.
