Regional Workshop on Brackish Water Use for Agricultural Production: Status, Good Agricultural Practices and New Developments
Natural Resources Degradation constitutes an important threat for the human society especially in the Near East and North Africa region. In particular, Land and Water Degradation is affecting and will affect agriculture and all dimensions of food security, such as food availability, food accessibility, food utilization and food systems stability. In addition to degradation, scarcity of land and water resources have and will have an impact on human health, livelihood assets and food production as well as growing threat to food security.

In addition to degradation, scarcity of land and water resources have and will have an impact on human health, livelihood assets and food production as well as growing threat to food security.
Conscious of these threats, Member Countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the region have requested the Organization and other partners for help in identifying appropriate actions and developing capacities to adapt national programs and policies to turning pollution into resources and to enhance their capacities in confronting the negative impacts of using marginal water resources for agriculture production (brackish water and treated wastewater).
In response to this request, FAO Regional Office for the Near East has over the last few years dedicated considerable attention to water scarcity issue in the region and taken a wide range of initiatives to enhance national capacities to adopt and implement water-scarcity coping initiative. In this connection and within the framework of the Regional Water Scarcity Initiative launched by FAO Regional Office for the Near East in 2013, the Regional Workshop is addressing Good Agricultural Practices Related to Brackish Water Use for Agriculture Production in Near East and North Africa region.
The Regional Workshop is dedicated to the theme “Brackish Water Use for Agricultural Production: Status, Good Agricultural Practices and New Developments” and aims at taking stock of the countries’ knowledge, exchanging experiences and identifying Good Agricultural Practices that will be the base for elaborating a regional guidelines for brackish water use for agriculture production.
Organized in collaboration with ICARDA, AWC, ICBA and MWRI-Egypt, the Regional Workshop will be held in Cairo, Egypt 10-12 June 2013. It will be attended by country delegates from 16 Member Countries, experts from 10 regional and international organizations and donors active in the area of brackish water use in agriculture production in the Region, as well as representatives of civil society and private sector.
