Facilitating and strengthening access to and exchange of knowledge and information among growers and small farmers has a strategic importance to improve agriculture practices and utilize in-country know-how more efficiently and effectively.

As a result of intensive agriculture research and cooperation, Egypt has accumulated know-how in various domains of the agriculture and horticulture value chains. Nevertheless these achievements and experiences remain largely unknown or underused by the small holder farming sector, which is predominant in Egypt.

Aware of the need to capitalize on the available information and in a bid to facilitate small farmers ‘access to it, the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR), represented by H.E. Dr. Salah Abdel Momein, signed Monday 11 of February, the document of a new Project Document with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), represented by Mr. Moujahed Achouri, FAO Representative in Egypt, to start the implementation of a new Project (FAO Technical Cooperation Program TCP – “Strengthening the Horticulture Information Support Network for Small Farmers in Egypt”).

Benefiting from FAO’s technical assistance, the project will strengthen MALR capacities to facilitate information and knowledge sharing among small-scale producers and market services providers about existing technologies and opportunities in the horticulture value chain.

“Improving access, flow and sharing of knowledge and information will reasonably lead to productivity and quality gains as it will enhance both domestic and export markets, improve food security and safety and increase small-scale producers and market service providers incomes”, said Mr. Moujahed Achouri.

The project builds on the fruitful partnership established between FAO and MALR in Egypt, “we welcome FAO’s assistance and expertise, which has contributed, during the last decades, to support agriculture and rural development in Egypt”, added the Minister, acknowledging the added value of FAO’s technical assistance to the implementation of the Ministry projects and programmes.
