FAO discusses cooperation with the ministry of irrigation and water resources

A delegation from the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) represented by Abdessalam Ould Ahmed, Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa; Pasquale Steduto, Deputy Regional Representative; and Mohamed Yacoub, Assistant to FAO Representative in Egypt held a meeting with H.E. Hossam Moghazy, the Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, last Sunday at the Ministry’s premises.
During the meeting both parties discussed means of enhancing their mutual cooperation, and discussed the use of improved and modern irrigation techniques including Solar Powered Water Lifting irrigation for efficient and sustainable management of water resources.
H.E Hossam Moghazy shared with FAO delegates the ministry’s future projects and stressed on the importance of benefiting from FAO's expertise in treating irrigation canals, with the aim of reducing water evaporation and ensuring continuous water flow, in addition to reusing treated water for irrigation purposes.
Abdessalam Ould Ahmed, FAO Assistant Director General and NENA Regional Representative said in a statement: “In light of FAO efforts towards the achievement of the newly launched Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and its Goals (SDGs), we are ready to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects that help in the sustainable management of water resources and in addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity in the region. This can be achieved through the use of improved, modern and solar powered irrigation systems, coupled with renewing agriculture methods”.
During the meeting, Mr. OuldAhmed awarded FAO 70th Anniversary Commemorative medal to H.E Hossam Moghazy, the Egyptian Minster of Water Resources and Irrigation in recognition for the longstanding partnership with the Ministry throughout the past 70 years.
