The agri-food sector is a key player in the management of biodiversity as well as its custodian, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said in his opening remarks at the 18th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA).

FAO Director-General QU Dongyu made the pledge at the closing segment of the UN Food Systems Summit, "Carrying forward the vision and momentum for 2030," where he delivered the Summit's closing statement.

Among Afghanistan’s many challenges, it is urgent that the international community tackle the dramatic hunger risk conditions faced by a third of the population and the livelihood risks in rural region areas where 70 percent of the population live, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu told G20 Foreign Ministers today.

Aquaculture plays a critical role in global food production, but innovation and equity are required to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, said today.

"It's an alarming picture, in which progress on many SDG targets has been reversed, with a significant impact on all aspects of sustainable development and making the achievement of the 2030 Agenda even more challenging," said FAO Chief Statistician, Pietro Gennari.

Today, on the occasion of the 65th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), FAO and IAEA recognized the contributions to plant mutation breeding from 28 researchers and research teams of institutions from across 20 countries - honouring them with awards for outstanding achievements.

"Without more active engagement from the private sector, we will not achieve the SDGs. For this reason, FAO welcomes the Zero Hunger Private Sector Pledge".

New publication provides an overview of challenges and opportunities for small-scale farmers

FAO Director-General QU Dongyu today urged countries to act with rapidity and resolve in transforming their agri-food systems. He made his remarks on the second day of the G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting, held in Florence, Italy.
