27 February 2016, Rome--- According to a new report issued today by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization despite growing interest in safeguarding biodiversity of livestock and poultry 17 percent of breeds are at risk of extinction. The agency warns that many valuable animal breeds continue to be at risk and it is calling for stronger efforts to use critical genetic resources sustainably in order to improve production and food security on a warmer, more crowded planet. FAO’s latest report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture provides new data and analysis on country trends for concerned experts in the field.
