International Conference: Highlighting the importance of halting deforestation for sustainable development

20 February 2018, Rome--- In view of increasing global population and the need to feed nine billion people by 2050, maintaining and expanding forests presents an enormous challenge that requires political will and concerted action across all relevant sectors. While global rates of deforestation have halved over the last two decades, the decrease has not been even across regions and deforestation rates in some regions, especially in Africa and Latin America, are still alarmingly high.

The three-day International Conference on Working across Sectors to Halt Deforestation and Increase Forest Area – from Aspiration to Action aims to review current drivers of deforestation, identify opportunities to accelerate reforestation, afforestation and forest landscape restoration, and provide recommendations on key policy measures and actions for countries and international community.

Peter Csoka, FAO Senior Forestry Officer, elaborates more on the theme for the Conference “Working Across Sectors to Halt Deforestation and Increase Forest Area – from Aspiration to Action”. Interview conducted by Murielle Sarr
