Launch of the inaugural Wangari Maathai Award Collaborative Partnership on Forestry commemorates
Rome, 27 September 2012- The 21st Session of FAO's Committee on Forestry (COFO), was also the occasion to honor the life and work of Kenyan and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Wangari Muta Maathai, on the first anniversary of her death in 2011.

A first ever USD 20,000 Wangari Maathai Award has then been launched to commemorate the impact of this extraordinary woman, who championed forest issues around the world, in recognition of outstanding contributions to preserve, restore and sustainably manage forests and to share their key role in rural livelihoods and the environment across generations.
