HOW PEOPLE USE THE FORESTS
The East African nation of Tanzania is currently undergoing its first ever national forest inventory, known as NAFORMA. Approximately one third of Tanzania is forested, and NAFORMA will assess the extent and state of the forests and the rate of deforestation. NAFORMA field workers have gathered not only biophysical data such as the number and size of trees but also, crucially, socio-economic information on how people use the forests. The data is being used to calculate the forest carbon stock and carbon emissions from deforestation.
