The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy and other national and UN partners, marked World Food Day 2025 and FAO’s 80th Anniversary with a symbolic celebration held at the Park of the Francophonie in Skopje.
This year’s World Food Day carried the global theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”, underlining the importance of collective action to transform agrifood systems in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequality. The celebration in North Macedonia also highlighted eight decades of FAO’s work worldwide and over 30 years of partnership with the country in promoting sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate resilience.
The event brought together representatives from the Government, the United Nations, academia, civil society, schools, and youth organizations for a symbolic tree planting ceremony — a living tribute to FAO’s 80 years of service. Participants planted Magnolia grandiflora and Catalpa globosa trees, symbolizing commitment to greener cities, forest protection, and a sustainable environment. The initiative emphasized the interconnection between forests, biodiversity, small farmers, and food systems — and the importance of community engagement in achieving a food-secure future.

Opening remarks were delivered by Mr Dame Dimitrovski, Advisor to the President of the Government for Environment and Climate and Primary Focal Point for the Green Climate Fund; H.E. Cvetan Tripunovski, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy; and Ms Kristina Mitic Arsova, FAO National Programme Coordinator. All speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration between government institutions, FAO, and partners in building sustainable, climate-resilient agrifood systems and in ensuring the right to safe, nutritious, and accessible food for all.

Participants enjoyed a range of interactive activities celebrating the links between nature, food, and sustainability. The event featured an FAO 80th Anniversary Photo Exhibition showcasing eight decades of partnership and innovation; a Children’s Art Corner with drawings for the global World Food Day Poster Contest; a Kids Beekeeping Workshop led by a local beekeeper, highlighting the role of bees and pollination in food production; and an FAO Information Stand with World Food Day publications and materials. A specially designed World Food Day & FAO80 Selfie Corner invited guests to capture and share moments from the celebration.

World Food Day, celebrated annually on 16 October, marks the founding of FAO in 1945. For eight decades, FAO has worked globally to ensure food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and foster resilience for a better life and a better future for all.
