The Israeli food pyramid (Hebrew: הישראלי המזון פירמידת).

Publication year

The Israeli food pyramid was first published in 1998, and most recently revised in 2008.

Process and stakeholders

The food pyramid was developed in a process led by the Ministry of Health with the participation of nutrition associations, universities and the food industry. It is endorsed by the Ministries of Health, Education and Agriculture.

Intended audience

The food pyramid is aimed at the general population.

Food guide

Israel uses a pyramid to represent the messages of its guidelines. At the base of the pyramid there is water; followed by five food groups: grains; vegetables; fruits; foods rich in protein (meat, eggs and dairy products); fats and oils; and sweets; and  snacks and soft drinks. The foods at the base of the pyramid should be consumed in large amounts on a daily basis. As one goes up towards the vertex of the pyramid, the recommended daily amount decreases. Consumption of foods at the top should be minimized. Images around the pyramid represent physical activity.


  • Eat a variety of foods.
  • Choose different foods from each of the five major food groups every day.
  • Ideally every main meal should contain at least three food groups.
  • Choose fibre-containing foods such as whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, including during meals.
  • Choose low-fat dairy products and lean meats. Use less oil in food preparation.
  • Limit your consumption of foods high in saturated fats and trans fats such as cakes and biscuits.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight. Do regular physical activity.
