A technical consultation for Africa entitled “Preparation of Food Based Dietary Guidelines and Nutrition Education for Promoting Healthy Diets” hosted by the Food Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Nutrition Society of South Africa (NSSA)

This technical consultation was a regional forum where ministers of health, agriculture and other nutrition experts and field nutrition officers met to discuss challenges and priority matters related to food, agriculture and malnutrition, with a view to promote the development and implementation of national food-based dietary guidelines.

The technical consultation consisted of a mix of activities such as oral and poster presentations, plenary sessions, panel group discussions and a series of country-group work sessions, with the aim of achieving the following overall purpose and objectives:

Overall goal

  • To provide information and training to countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to enhance governments’ institutional capacities in developing, implementing and evaluating national food based dietary guidelines and nutrition education for promoting healthy diets.

Learning Objectives: The technical consultation meeting consisted of a mix of activities such as oral and poster presentations, plenary sessions, panel group discussions and a series of country-group work sessions guided by the following five learning objectives:

  • Justify and advocate for the important role of food-based dietary guidelines in supporting healthy diets and nutritional well-being of individuals and populations.
  • Compare different models and lessons learned from countries, which have developed, implemented and evaluated food based dietary guidelines and explore applicability to their own context.
  • Select basic principles, strategies and tools most relevant to own context to effectively develop, implement and evaluate national food based dietary guidelines.
  • Plan ways on how to incorporate the recommended process for the development, implementation and evaluation of food based dietary guidelines into national and/or regional nutrition-related initiatives. 
  • Create a regional network on food based dietary guidelines to share knowledge, best practices and lessons learned.

The technical consultation meeting will be organized into seven core-training sessions:

  1. The Need for Food Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) in Sub-Saharan Africa
  2. FBDGs Processes and Countries’Experiences
  3. Information Needs for preparing FBDGs
  4. Developing the FBDGs, Food guides and Messages
  5. Multi-sectorial Implementation of FBDGs and Nutrition Education
  6. Monitoring and Evaluation of  FBDGs
  7. Definition of Next Steps and Follow-up Mechanisms
