Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC)

ARC is part of the Sudanese Ministry of Science and Technology.  The Corporation’s mission is to plan, develop and implement research designed to produce technologies and systems that are required to ensure sustainable crop productivity, food security, and export capacity.  The Land and Water Research Program in ARC aims to compact desert creep, erosion, and loss of fertility through the development of suitable technologies such as land preparation, irrigation, and fertilizer use.  The Desertification and Arid Land Research Program aims to establish a model for combating desertification and facilitating increased utilization of degraded lands to prevent rural to urban migration.  The Range and Pasture Research Program aims to conserve rangelands by improving feed for the national herd, reducing overgrazing, and conserving national resources.

Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon Research Station (ART)

ART is a federal research centre of the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture focusing on plant production and animal husbandry systems.  Research at the Station combines ecology, economics and agricultural engineering to support an agricultural system that is non-industrial in nature.  Studies on organic agriculture are focused on looking for solutions to technical problems in organic production in arable crops, in grassland systems and in management of organic manure, farm and ground fertilizers in order to maintain soil fertility and produce high yields.  In partnership with FiBL, ART maintains a long-term trial on organic and biodynamic versus conventional farming known as the DOK project.

Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI)

CAZRI is a federal research institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.  Its mandate is to undertake research that will contribute to the development of sustainable farming systems in the arid ecosystem.  The Division of Animal Science & Forage researches livestock issues such as: health/deficiency diseases, impact of drought on production and reproduction status, formulation of supplementary and complete feed, feeding management, and genetic improvement of breeds, as well as pasture issues such as: impact of drought on feed availability, establishment of suitable Silvi pasture system for optimum yield of grasses, and improvement of indigenous grasses.  The Division of Natural Resources and Environment researches the integrated assessment of natural resources including soil and water, soil carbon and carbon sequestration, desertification assessment and mapping, soil fertility changes, and evapo-transpiration of arid zone crops.

Centre for Arid Zone Studies, University of Maiduguri

This Centre does multi-disciplinary research on problems that affect arid areas including desertification, drought and soil degration, and crop and livestock issues.  It includes work on ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, climatology, rural development, human and animal health, and socio-economical problems.  Specific research topics include soil and moisture changes in relation to land use patterns, over-cultivation and grazing leading to desertification, rehabilitation of degraded lands, and prevention of livestock diseases.
