Strengthening market access for Balochistan’s Onion Farmers

25/02/2025

As part of the EU-funded Revival of Balochistan Water Resources Programme (RBWRP), onion value chain actors from Balochistan’s Pishin Lora Basin participated in an exposure visit to Punjab to strengthen market linkages, enhance business opportunities, and adopt improved packaging and supply chain practices. The visit facilitated direct engagement with commission agents, retailers, and packaging manufacturers to secure better trade terms, reduce transaction costs, and establish a stable market presence.
Major commission agents pledged support for Balochistan’s farmers, committing to competitive prices for high-quality onions. Six MoUs were signed to establish long-term market linkages, while Gujranwala’s Haji Ishaq Bali Khan & Sons reduced the commission rate from 9% to 5%, ensuring better financial returns
Meetings with retailers, including Carrefour Pakistan, focused on direct procurement, packaging standards, and grading, laying the groundwork for structured supply chains. Farmers also explored modern packaging solutions at Express Packaging and observed consumer trends at METRO and Emporium Stores, gaining valuable insights into branding and retail visibility.
Through FAO’s ongoing exposure visits, Balochistan’s onion growers are steadily improving market access, trade opportunities, and financial returns, paving the way for long-term economic growth
