FAO Launches Climate-Resilient Food Security Initiative in Sujawal

04/03/2025

Sujawal – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched the Building Resilience and Addressing Vulnerabilities to Emergencies (BRAVE). The project aimed at strengthening climate resilience, improving food security, and enhancing livelihoods in communities vulnerable to climate change. BRAVE is funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and is being implemented in Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab provinces, specifically targeting areas affected by the devastating 2024 monsoon floods. BRAVE consortium is led by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and implemented by a consortium, including FAO, UNICEF, CARE International, ACTED, and Islamic Relief.
The programme focuses on strengthening disaster preparedness, improving humanitarian response, and fostering long-term climate resilience in Pakistan’s most vulnerable regions. The project is targeting 60 villages across three Union Councils in District Sujawal (Sindh), Muzaffargarh (Punjab), and Sohbatpur (Balochistan), reaching approximately 9,000 households in each district.
The event, held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Conference Room, also marked the activation of the Extended Technical Working Group (TWG), a collaborative effort bringing together development actors including the BRAVE consortium, government officials, academia, and research institutions in Sujawal to align efforts toward building sustainable agrifood systems.
This Extended TWG is part of the Climate Resilience and Humanitarian Response (CRHR) programme, which is a key component of BRAVE aimed at building sustainable agrifood systems and addressing the impacts of climate change. The Extended TWG will focus on implementing climate-resilient interventions, including agriculture, livestock, rangelands, forestry, renewable energy, and aquaculture, to help communities adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Mr. Abdul Karim Sangrasi, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Sujawal highlighted, “The BRAVE project represents a pivotal step in addressing the vulnerabilities of our communities to climate change. By uniting government departments, development partners, and local stakeholders, we can ensure a coordinated and effective response to the challenges posed by natural disasters and environmental degradation. This initiative will not only provide immediate relief but will also lay the foundation for long-term resilience for our communities.”
Mr. Julius Githinji Muchemi, Head of Province, FAO Sindh stated “FAO is proud to lead the Technical Working Group on Climate-Resilient Food Security and Livelihoods under the BRAVE programme. This initiative marks a significant milestone in our efforts to transform agrifood systems and improve the livelihoods of vulnerable communities. Through collaborative knowledge management and innovative climate-resilient models, we aim to create scalable solutions that can be replicated across the province and beyond.”
The workshop provided an overview of the BRAVE programme’s strategic objectives, including addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of households affected by the 2024 monsoon floods, prioritizing the implementation of climate-resilient agricultural models, and collaboratively developing knowledge products to scale best practices across Sindh. Participants actively contributed to discussions that defined the Terms of Reference for the Technical Working Group (TWG), focusing on key areas such as team composition, union council, village and beneficiary selection criteria. The Government departments and downstream partners expressed their strong support for the pivotal initiatives being implemented under BRAVE, which focus on strengthening climate resilience, improving food security, and enhancing livelihoods in the vulnerable communities of Sujawal.
