The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with funding from the Government of Japan, has successfully concluded an emergency project aimed at restoring the livelihoods of flood-affected communities in Balochistan and Sindh.
Launched in response to the devastating 2022 floods, the USD 6.48 million initiative benefited over 74,000 households—more than 520,000 people—through a combination of agricultural inputs, livestock support, and targeted assistance to vulnerable groups, including female-headed households.
Key achievements include:
•    Agricultural inputs and training for 14,000 households
•    Rehabilitation of 1,500 hectares of farmland
•    Distribution of poultry, small ruminants, and feed to livestock-owning families
•    Vaccination of over 629,000 animals
•    Construction of animal shelters and capacity building for female farmers
The project was implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, disaster management authorities, and other partners, promoting climate-smart agriculture and resilient food systems.
At a project closing event in Islamabad, FAO Representative Ms. Florence Rolle and Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Akamatsu Shuichi, commended the impact of the intervention and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting vulnerable communities.
“With Japan’s timely support, families not only regained their ability to produce food but also strengthened their resilience against future shocks,” said Ms. Rolle.
